Message from your Captain - 17.03.08
Dear Members
The Centenary Year has begun!
I am honoured to be your Captain in this special year. I hope to have the opportunity to play golf with as many of you as time allows, and I look forward to seeing members and their families at our social functions during the year.
It is going to be a busy and exciting time, and I wish you all good golf, good weather, and a memorable Centenary Year!
Kind regards
Terry Rowney
The club was incorporated as the Knebworth Golf Links at its current location in 1908.
At this time the development of Knebworth Garden Village was underway and the golf course featured in the literature about this housing scheme:
"The Links were laid out by Willie Park, and have since been the venue of some notable matches. There is a splendid brick-built Club House, offering every comfort to members. The course is undulating, and very sporting, and is, in addition, naturally beautiful."
The Club went through something of a crisis in 1946 when the Captain raised the subscription, the previous increase being in 1929!
The Club had struggled along during the war years, and with continuing petrol rationing it was difficult to recruit new members, or for members who did not live locally to get to the course. By 1954 things had improved, part of the course taken over during the war had been released, and the Club had extended the original course to 18 seperate holes.
"We can hardly wait to tee up for our first crack at the 18 holes we have waited for so patiently, or to welcome the many new members we can accommodate and need".
The course was modified again in the 1960's, and has since seen little major change in layout. That 'first crack' down the outstanding opening hole remains a challenge to even the bravest of golfing hearts.
